Audiologists vs. Dispensers (Hearing Aid Specialists)
The difference between an audiologist and a hearing aid specialist.
Audiologists go through college to obtain a degree in audiology. They are educated in all functions of the ear and hearing. They receive very little actual specific training or education with hearing aids. Most do not sell or work with hearing aids. Many of the audiologists that do dispense hearing aids work with an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor’s office.
Hearing aid specialists are not required to have a college education, however, if they are licensed and Board Certified, they have passed an in-depth test administered by the state in which they operate or have undergone a national certification process. Most states also require a number of years working as an apprentice or associate before being eligible to become fully licensed.
