Talking on the phone without getting feedback

A lot of people say that if they cover their ear while wearing a hearing aid they get feedback. I wondering, since the phone covers that area of the ear, how are you able to talk/listen on the phone without having the issue of feedback?
I get feedback only when the microphone area of the aid is covered by the phone. I find that if I hold the telephone in the normal position over the actual ear opening rather than the aid (assuming its a BTE aid) it does not give feedback.
