Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids are shaped in an arch that fits neatly behind or over the ear. A custom ear mold that is made to the accurate shape of your ear is used with these aids to direct the amplified sound into the ear canal.
Many BTE hearing aids can be attached to external sound sources such as televisions or other assistive listening devices. This style offers the greatest possibilities for hearing aid adjustment compared to all styles of hearing aids. These aids can be fitted from mild through profound hearing loss

There can be an advantage for some people depending on lifestyle and hearing loss. Supposedly there is a small improvement in laboratory tests, but so small that most people could wear a RIE (or RIC) on one ear and a hollow tube on the other and not be able to tell which was which.
Our opinion is that overall the hollow tube is more reliable, but since the Receiver is the most common failure, the RIC may be easier to maintain.

What is the difference between these 3 hearing aids: Widex clear 440 c4-9 (BTE) vs. X Series Power Plus BTE from StarKey vs. Phonak Cassia SP (BTE)? The pair of hearing aid that went dead on me were Pixel Resound (PL70-D/DI) - I require a powerful BTE pair of hearing aids. I'm just wondering which one is the better hearing aid of the 3 mentioned?

Which aid is better is going to depend on what you are looking for. I'm pretty sure that the Starkey Power Plus has the most power. The Cassia is lower technology, but could be just fine. I'm not familiar with the Widex, but do not believe they are known for power - but then neither is ReSound. It is important to get the opinion of a competent professional who understands working with severe losses. You could try contacting Choice Hearing Aid Providers who advertises on this site.

This is a hearing aid that worn behind the ear. The device amplifies sounds more than most other types of hearing aids. Behind-the-ear aids rest behind the ear. Sound is sent to the ear canal via the earmold and clear plastic tubing molded to fit in the outer ear area. BTEs are suitable for almost all types and degrees of hearing loss and are especially appropriate for infants and young children and for people with more severe hearing losses.

In a BTE hearing aid, the mechanics of the piece are housed in a case that fits behind the ear. Sounds are captured by a tiny microphone and transmitted from the device through a tube that connects to the ear-mold, which fits inside the ear. BTE’s are often better at the amplification process than smaller models because they have a larger amplifier and stronger battery.
