Low cost options

My mother's hearing has steadily gotten worse over the last year or two and now that she can barely hear normal conversation she is finally considering HA's. She's 87 and doesn't really go anywhere but the grocery store. We started looking into different HA options but they're so expensive. She lives on SS of a little over 400/mo, has no savings, and my family isn't really in a position to help out much financially. Are there any options low income folks? From what I've read, Medicare doesn't pay for HA's. We have also looked at buying HA's off EBay and taking them to a local place for set up, or is that a bad idea? Just weighing options and would appreciate any insight from others who have dealt with a similar situation.

Check out Hear Now Aid by Starkey or see what programs you can find in a google search.

I just got a Songbird Disposable Hearing Aid yesterday and so far its working great. It lasts about 400 hrs and only costs $80. You replace it after the 400 hrs. Works out to be about $320 a year for me, but I am retired and would only have it on for a few hrs a day. If all she needs it for is going to the grocery store this may be a possible cheap option.

I've been delighted with the low cost, off-the-shelf, aids I've bought. I've had an HD-100 ITE (£99) and, latterly, an HD-400 BTE (£349). The service is excellent and you get thirty days to try them with a no quibble money back guarantee if they don't work out for you.
